Skylights design ideas, inspiration & pictures

What are skylights?

Skylights are  windows  set in a roof or ceiling at the same angle. It’s excellent for day-lighting purposes, ventilation, passive cooling and light transmitting fenestration. Top lighting can be used to allow direct and/or indirect sunlight, providing a visual connection to the outdoor environment to interior occupants.

Skylights can act as a natural alarm clock in a bedroom every morning. Some skylights even automatically open during a set time to provide an excellent source of ventilation into a room. However, keep in mind that a fixed skylight is non-operable, meaning there is no ventilation. An operable (venting) unit skylight uses a hinged sash attached to and supported by the frame. When within reach of the occupants, this type is also called a roof window. There are many shapes, sizes and designs available on Homify.

In what type of houses can a skylight be integrated?

Skylights can be integrated in the form of balconies or small protruding roofs in traditional style houses with gable roofs. For industrial style houses, the upper part of the roof can be used to install glass windows or stained glass if you prefer, with metal structure anchored to the roof slab.

In modern houses, you can open up at the top of the walls, in double height rooms, to light naturally. Whereas, in rustic style houses, the mezzanine or the attic can be used to install a skylight.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of skylights?

When placed on the roof, even if it is smaller in size to a regular window, the lighting is much greater since it is direct from the sun's rays and covers the entire daytime. They also offer a visual connection with the sky and the environment in general.

In case of open spans, it generates ventilation for passive cooling techniques, removing hot air. In winter, it integrates heat throughout the day and ventilation if the structure allows it. Natural light is used better and for longer. The use of artificial light is only as auxiliary or used only at night, thanks to the use of sunlight.

If it is defined as fixed from the beginning, it does not seek ventilation, only lighting, and the change involves removing the structure and re-positioning the piece from the marquetry or cancellation.

If located in a very high part as a double height ceiling or the upper end of a high wall, it is difficult to open it to ventilate. You can also overheat the interior in very warm or desert regions. Lastly, it can be clean and handle because of the height.

What are the requirements to install a skylight at home?

First, it is necessary to confirm if the house and its space distribution are suitable for a skylight such as if there is an attic or if there is enough height of walls or sky to locate it. Consider if the structure of the roof or of the walls resists a modification or if the general structure and height allows for a skylight.

Lastly, do not forget that if you need to do some structural remodeling, you must apply for a building license. For further information, you can consult with local Indian real estate experts.

How to integrate a skylight to my home?

Firstly, consider the measures of windows suited for your home and options available in the market. Then, cut a hole in the ceiling to fit the frame or cancel. Consider the construction material: if it is concrete slab, this involves breaking and detailing in insulation; whether it is wood or light material, cutting is cleaner and work faster.

Next, install the frame, taking care to properly isolate any joints. Secure the support, either with angles or with anchors on the cover. Finally, place the window in the framed area and insulate with cold silicone or some other material. If you have leaks later on, you might want to contact the professionals in waterproofing.

How do I keep skylights in good condition?

You must verify at least once a year that there are no leaks, checking the insulation and the cancellation or marquetry. This impacts on the expense of air conditioning or heating. Sometimes storms, falls of branches, heavy rains or hailstones can smash the windows and we do not realize because the glass is stable. It is necessary to review and replace as soon as possible.

Cleaning is easier either with a scaffold, a ladder or with a duster with extension. It is necessary to keep the glass and marquetry clean. A dirty skylight can not fulfill the function of illuminating openly and clearly.

How to protect the skylights from light?

Shutters or blinds are excellent for controlling the intensity of light during the day. Some of its characteristics are that it can be closed or opened at your own pleasure, either with remote control or with a manual extension. They are fixed, simply their leaves open or close instantly, maintaining the appropriate level of light according to the circumstances. Shutters can be made of wood, PVC, aluminum, and should take the shape of the window and its position.

Today technology is what dominates the world, and can be used to make the most out of skylights and natural lighting. Remote opening is a technology that applies for the movement of the blinds. You can also of course have a remote control for opening and closing windows. Light tubes or lightways to direct, focus and define the site to be illuminated can also be installed for extra convenience in the night time when you want to gaze at the stars and the moon.
