This beautiful project in Hampshire is a fine example of what can be achieved when taking the prefabricated route with Baufritz: a lovely healthy home for a happy couple in their golden years. When it came to building a new home, these Baufrtiz clients had a very specific incentive: not only did they hope to design a beautiful, practical and sustainable house for their retirement, but the couple also wanted their home to be as healthy as possible. “We were offered to visit a Baufritz reference house in the area and had a chance to talk to the owner. We were amazed with the house and how happy the owner was”.
The house can be adapted to single storey living, as the current layout has adown stairs office, which could be transformed into a bedroom if needed. Crafted with future generations in mind, the couple decided to build their house using Lifetime Homes Standards. The concept was initially developed in 1991 by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, allowing homes to be easily adaptable for lifetime use at minimal cost.
The home benefits from an open-plan layout punctuated with large south facing windows to provide an abundance of natural light and views acrossthe South Downs. Extensive terraces connect the inside to the outdoors. Garden pergolas have been added to grow foliage creating shade in summer and allowing sun in winter.
The ground floor is on a single level providing open plan living. South facing sitting, dining, living spaces are designed to exploit the aspect of the landscape beyond. A third bedroom/office and easy to access bathroom are found at the entrance façade / front. The interiors were also carefully thought through, using solid wood floors throughout the house to create an airy living space.
Although the planning process was straightforward, the new house had to be subservient in mass & height to the surrounding buildings. In order to create a second floor, the two upstairs bedrooms and bathroom were integrated into the loft space. A practice common in Germany and other European countries. The south facing master bedroom boasts light interiors, its expansive windows capture the spectacular views.
Externally the house has been finished using a combination of white render and natural horizontal timber cladding, with large floor-to-ceiling windows allowing plenty of natural light to flood into the building.
The large terrace with the pergola in natural wood offers the opportunity to have a pleasant time outside – for both gardening and relaxing – the possibilities are endless.
Impression of tranquility and peace is created by the interplay of the biological mineral plaster façade and the natural wooden cladding combined with the simple, perfectly proportioned shape of the structure.
At the heart of the house, the kitchen merges seamlessly with the living room commanding the views across the ground floor and out to the garden.
A beautiful bay window with a view is so tempting: who isn’t dreaming of some peaceful time with a book or even taking a short nap on those soft pads and cuddly pillows? Even the coldest days would feel warmer and brighter in that special place.
A staircase is an essential element in any house: with Baufritz you receive exceptional quality hand finished products from our partners in Germany. Each edge of the steps is rounded by hand in contrast to industrially milled bevels, in this way the step lasts much longer and feels much softer.
A beautiful example of a practical, well-proportioned bathroom finished with 100% natural non-toxic materials.
An elegant choice of natural materials and a pared-back approach to decorating make these bedrooms particularly attractive.
Interplay of blue and white brings into the room a light taste of sunny Portugal with its tasteful Azulejo and long beautiful sunsets.
