UnSolid

UnSolid
is a research on unexpected ground-breaking morphologies generated by mathematical computations and innovative wood manufacturing technologies for Interior and ad Furniture Design. Unpublished and limited edition pieces have been be specifically designed and presented during the Rome Maker Faire.

Mauro Del Santo is a designer based in Rome, Italy, with about ten years’ experience in developing furniture with innovative materials and last generation manufacturing technologies. UnSolid is the practical result of his research focused on unexpected morphologies generated by mathematical computations and innovative wood manufacturing technologies for Interior and ad Furniture Design.

The work includes lamps in the shape of surfaces engendered by parametric mathematical equations and developed to be produced in wood. A partition wall is also shown as a sample of a new technique Mauro developed to produce complex computer-generated geometries into surfaces for interiors such as partitions, walls, ceilings, seats and tables. The results were possible by using innovative technologies and new materials such as the Bendywood, a chemically treated wood bendable as metal.

Among major achievements a fast and economical technique of woodworking has been developed to build complex surfaces of large size. The versatility of the system able to create strongly characterizes interiors and innovative furniture with shapes hardly producible using different technologies. An important result has been also achieved by the experimentations on computational processing for the development of outstanding morphologies.

The ceiling light and wall partition that make up UnSolid by Mauro Del Santo, an industrial designer based in Rome, Italy, are visually striking. Both of them follow a slatted sort of design in which they are not completely, well, solid, hence the collection’s name. Yet they aren’t rigid either. Instead, the pieces adhere to a fluid form that gives them a beautiful sculptural appeal.

UnSolid by Mauro Del Santo was recently presented at the Rome Maker Faire. The designs embraced mathematical computations and innovative wood manufacturing technologies. According to the designer, “Among major achievements a fast and economical technique of woodworking has been developed to build complex surfaces of large size.[… ] An important result has been also achieved by the experimentations on computational processing for the development of outstanding morphologies.”
