MEHTA HOUSE

Concept

“LESS IS MORE”.

THIS IS THE UNDERLYING DESIGN THOUGHT.

THE SITE ITSELF SHOUTED LOUD AND DEMANDED CLEAN AND STRAIGHT TREATMENTS, DIFFERENT FROM ANYTHING NEARBY. THE DESIGN PROCESS NEEDED TO LOOK AT A RESPONSE TO THE SITE DEVOID OF ANY SURROUNDING INFLUENCES… .AN ATTEMPT TO RUN AWAY FROM THE CHAOS AROUND.

THE CHALLENGE WAS TO DEFINE THE REQUIREMENTS IN THE BUDGET CONSTRAINTS AND SUCCEED IN MAKING THE STRUCTURE STAND OUT FROM THE SURROUNDING CHAOTIC DEVELOPMENT.

MOST OF THE SURROUNDING STRUCTURES HAD TYPICAL ARCHED BALCONIES AND CORNICED AND FLUTED PILLARS. THE ELEVATION FROM THE GROUND FLOOR WAS CONTINUED ALONGWITH THE PLAN ONTO THE UPPER FLOOR.

THE SCRATCH ON BOARD STARTED WITH THE BASIC THOUGHT OF EXISTING CONSTRAINTS AND AS WE MOVED THE DESIGN EXPRESION STARTED DEVELOPING INTO A MINIMALIST, CLEAN CUBIC FORM, WITH ONE PRIMARY ELEMENT – THE CANOPY CLAD IN WOOD FINISH SHERA PLANKS- DEFINING THE GEOMETRY OF THE STRUCTURE.

WALLS WERE REMOVED AND PLINTH EXTENDED UPTO PERMITED LIMITS TO ACCOMMODATE THE CLIENTS REQUIREMENTS.

THE STAIRCASE IN FABRICATION LENT A SLEEKER AND INTERESTING LOOK TO THE INTERIOR SPACE, ACCOMODATING THE STRUCTURAL AND THE SPACE REQUIREMENTS ALONGWITH IT. THE ARCHITECTURAL PROJECTIONS ON THE ROAD SIDE WERE REDESIGNED AND RECONSTRUCTED TO REMOVE THE ARCHES AND RCC FINS AND GIVE A SMALL STANDING BALCONY TO THE MASTER BEDROOM ON THE FIRST FLOOR.

THE STANDING BALCONY WITH THE GLASS RAILING, JUTTS OUT FROM THE SURFACE AND IS CONNECTED TO THE CANOPY BY STRAIGHT VERTICAL LINES. THIS FORM IN FUNCTION HOLDS ON TO THE GEOMETRY OF THE STRUCTURE

THE M.S.PIPES IN THE FRONT ELEVATION HAVE BEEN REPEATED FOR THE BALCONY AND THE UTILITY AREA. AS A CONTINUATION OF THE SAME ARCHITECTURAL VOCABULARY. ARTIFICIAL LAWN PATTERNS ENGRAVED IN THE PAVING PATTERNS TO BREAK THE MONOTONY.

THE GROOVED WHITE SURFACE IS TO DIVIDE THE DEAD WALL IN PARTS AND TO BALANCE THE SAME, A CANOPY IN TEXTURED SHERA PLANKS DIVIDES THE ELEVATION AND THE GRAY COLOR ADDS A DEFINITE IDENTITY TO IT. THE WHITE SURFACE IN THE FRONT DOES NOT GIVE A CLUE OF THE PLACEMENT OF THE MASTER BED TOILET HIDDEN BEHIND.

THE ORIGINAL STRUCTURE WAS A GROUND FLOOR STRUCTURE WITH RCC FINS AND ARCHES AND STONE MASONRY. THE CHALLENGE WAS TO RETAIN THE EXISTING 2 BHK STRUCTURE, COLUMNS, BEAMS AND DESIGN A 4 BHK HOUSE USING THE AVAILABLE FSI AND IN THE AVAILABLE SPACE.

THE INTERIOR SPACES HAVE BEEN DESIGNED TO ACCOMMODATE A SMALL VERANDAH, LIVING, DINING, KITCHEN, STORE, 2 BEDROOMS AND TOILETS ON THE GROUND LFOOR.

ON THE FIRST FLOOR, A STUDY AND FAMILY AREA, 2 BEDROOMS WITH DRESSING AREAS HAVE BEEN DESIGNED.

A SMALL LANDSCAPED AREA OUTSIDE THE MASTER TOILET PROVIDES FOR LIGHT AND VENTILATION TO THE SAME WITHOUT AFFECTING THE PRIVACY OF THE TOILET, WHICH IS ACTUALLY ON THE FRONT SIDE, FACING THE ROAD. THE AREA BELOW THIS LANDSCAPED AREA HAS BEEN DEVOTED FOR THE MANDIR.

THE WALLS AROUND THE STAIRS HAVE BEEN DELETED AND A MAZE OF M.S. TUBES FORMS THE SUPPORT SYSTEM, HAND RAIL ETC FROM THE FIRST TO THE TERRACE LEVEL. A SIMILAR TREATMENT IS GIVEN FOR THE STAIRS AND HANDRAIL FROM THE GROUND TO THE FIRST FLOOR.

BEING DEVOUT FOLLOWERS OF THE THEORY OF ART OF LIVING, THE CLIENTS WANTED A MEDITATION SPACE IN THE HOUSE. THIS WAS CARVED AT THE TERRACE LEVEL BELOW THE OVERHEAD WATER TANK AND IN THE FORM OF A COURTYARD TYPE SPACE BETWEEN THE OHT AND ADJOINING RESIDENCE, AGAIN AT THE TARRACE LEVEL. THIS WAS FURTHER ENHANCED BY DESIGNING A TRELLIS ALONGWITH A SMALL WATER BODY IN THE SAME AREA. TO MAINTAIN THE PRIVACY OF THIS SPACE, A PARTITION IN WOODEN PLANKS WAS PROPOSED ON THE PARAPET SIDE.

THE PROJECT ACHIEVES CLIENT’S SATISFACTION & REGENERATE INTO SOCIAL CONTEXT. THE CONCEPT FULFILLS TO INDUCING THE NEW LIFESTYLE TO AN OLD STRUCTURE.

Project facts:

Renovation and extension to a 900.00 sqft existing residence.

Total proposed Built up area was to be max 2200.00 sqft as per regulations.

Exiting plinth and RCC structure to be preserved and used.

Total project completed in a span of 16 months. May 2012—Aug 2013

This included design to occupancy.

Completed on a budget of 48.00 lakh.

Included all civil, RCC works, electrical, plumbing, landscape, site development and interiors.

Clients Brief:

Understated – simple. 4 BHK residence. Budget- 40-45.00 lakh.

That was the only requirement given by the client.

Materials used:

RCC frame structure.

Vitrified tiles.

Shera planks.

Restraints:

An already existing plinth, grid of beams and columns added to the design constraints.

The existing ground floor structure was @ 900.00 sqft with 2 bedrooms, living and kitchen.

The entire society layout has similar units. This being a twin house, it was mandatory that the existing structure and plinth be utilized, and, any extension be done on the same. Extension of only one additional floor was allowed on the site.

Add to it that one side was a common wall between the two units.

As the adjoining unit was already built, the structural design demanded that the same heights for the rooms and roof be continued as the central line of columns and beams was common.
