Church Mews, Hartland, Devon

The Church Mews housing development in Hartland, North Devon lies within a conservation area for the town and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The site was formally the location for a timber-framed church which had fallen into disuse, thus presenting an excellent infill site for much needed housing development in Hartland.

The four cottage-style dwellings, two semi-detached and two detached, provide residential accommodation for four families within the centre of the village with excellent access to local amenities including shops and school.

The linear arrangement of the properties onto an open courtyard space reflects the existing streetscape and historic development of the village. The design for the properties is typical of the local vernacular with traditional style porches, natural slate roofs, timber windows and doors and white painted render walls. These materials were chosen both for their appearance, in keeping with the village character, and for their durability in a coastal climate.

The homes were built to Lifetime Homes standards with accessible entrances, doors and WC facilities on the ground floor.
