From Caligari to Centro Olos

The project developed for Centro Olos’s professional studies is a tribute that Studio Mimesi wanted to made to the artistic avant-garde of the first part of the twentieth century and particularly to the expressionist, a fascinating creative phase of questioning about reality and still a valid expression of a contemporary architectural dynamism. The mention is clear and explicit, directly inspired by the amazing visionary scenography of the silent film, “Doctor Caligari’s cabinet”, an expressionistic film screened in 1920 for the first time. We get the ideas to characterize the project’s founding element (central gallery) directly from the film sets, realized by the artists Herman Warm, Walter Reimann e Walter Rohrig.

Along this path we celebrated the quest for a more expressionist valid conception of space, its congenital need for exploration of the fantastic, the supernatural, the size of the dream. The long corridor’s transformed reality and the research of its own  intern, creative and articulated spatiality become dissonant elements, an emotional journey into the cave, that found its peace in the wooden box spaces on the side.

The box is accepted and suffered, but at the same time it’s distorted, twisted and tortured. Different cavities are created, that do not derive from the package, but determine it themselves becoming the new stars of the architectural space. Our project, after all, is only an episode that tries to keep the architecture related to art, not to keep it silent, but able to express moods and feelings such as love, fear, sadness, loss, nostalgia, la joie de vivre!
