Overview

Working in close collaboration with a private self-build client, dwell design was commissioned to undertake a major re-plan and extension of a modest semi-detached bungalow in Chichester to create a spacious open-plan feel and two additional bedrooms.  The ground floor extension provides open-plan kitchen / living space, garden views and a large amount of additional light.  Key features include: the double set of bi-folding doors with a corner post; the roof windows in the vaulted ceiling of the main living space; an outdoor covered veranda and a music studio in the garden.  The open-plan kitchen / living space was designed to be vaulted internally due to re-using the existing bungalow roof structure to create a dramatic space.  The use of SIP panel construction ensured an efficient build and as part of the technical design strategy that dwell design assisted the client with, a thermal store and air / building management systems were also integrated.   In addition to a well-configured open-plan space, a drop-in fuel has occurred since the changes were carried out.  The proposed changes provide extensive views of the garden, much greater light into both the main living and bedroom spaces, and much best utilisation of the existing space in the house.  Multi-facing red brick was chosen as the key material to match the existing house and complement the modern design and form of the extension.
