One of the most difficult sites on the Estate allowed for one of the most unusual designs. The flood-line of the river along which this house is built forced the ground floor to be raised above the ground level on the river side, whereas on the entrance side it is only slightly higher than the ground level. This allowed for a number of raised decks with different conditions – covered, uncovered, semi-enclosed, others corridor-like, onto which the different rooms open and which allow for choice, depending on climatic exposure and function. The client requested a glass box for the main volume to be able to admire the surrounding nature (including wildlife), which was then “grounded” by a stone tower which marks the entrance and grounds the floating element of the glass box and the cantilevered decks to their terrain. A double-volume living space allows for dramatic views of the hillside opposite the river but the equally important heart of the house is a deep sheltered veranda for outdoor living. adjacent to the double-volume glazed internal space .The two communicate with one another by means of glazed sliding-folding doors which allow for visual continuity when closed, and spatial continuity when opened.
