RAISE: INDIA HOMES 2020 Competition entry – 2012, Parikshit Dalal Design + Architecture Parikshit Dalal Design + Architecture

On the 3000 sq. ft. (50’ x 60’) plot, the house is conceived as 3 blocks of 500 sq. ft. each (Diagram 1). The central block is lifted and placed over the two, as a bridge. This creates a long courtyard space which becomes the focus of the house (Diagram 2).

The bridge (Block 2) becomes the bedrooms on the upper floor, looking down to the court. The living/ kitchen (Block 1) spill out into the court, while the dining becomes the space below the bridge.

CREATIVITY: The unique concept is that Block 3 is hollowed out (in Option 1) such that it becomes a pavillion space surrounded by the garden. Over 1500 sq. ft. of this garden space is available as spill-out from the living and dining. The couple with no kids could use this luxurious space for entertainment/ gatherings with friends, since the bedrooms are above. The pavillion in the future would be infilled with walls to form the third bedroom for the parents, thereby creating 2 distinct open spaces, i.e., the court and the private garden behind.

FLEXIBILITY/ EASE OF BUILDING: The design is simple in its flexibility, with minimal demolition/ construction required to alter the use of the house from Option 1 to Option 2.

In Option 1, the semi-open space in Block 3 will function as a covered pavillion within the garden. In Option 2, the grandparent’s bedroom will be constructed here. Thus, the concept is to build the structure of the house entirely in the beginning, so that modification afterwards involves merely infilling of walls.

The house is entered through the garden court. The plan offers flexibility of entry in such a manner that if the pedestrian entry were to be shifted from the shorter edge to the longer edge (in a site with different road conditions), the house would still be entered through the garden court.

One car park is provided in Option 1. In Option 2, the edge wall of the court is relocated (reducing the length of the court slightly) to accommodate two cars.
