Being a client’s designer, Sufyan Duberia was given the task of designing a Bridal Room by Mr. Faizal Saya. Usually the process between a client and designer involves the client conveying to the designer their preferences, what they like. This time though, Mr. Saya showed Mr. Duberia a lot of examples, rooms of how he wanted the Bridal Room to not be made like. Mr. Saya was opposed to the traditional ideas of a four posted bed, huge chandeliers and other design sensibilities which are associated with the purpose of such a room. Baffled by Mr. Saya’s showing him examples of things he did not want, Mr. Duberia inquired about what he liked, to which he got an answer – “What I want doesn’t exist yet!”

Bridal Rooms by tradition have a lot of symbolism and legacy attached to them. In the process of discarding much of the existing, Mr. Duberia got this unique opportunity to make something never done before in this context. Yet, he did not lose sight of the purpose at hand, and while designing he made certain to maintain a language that speaks of grandness and intimacy alike.

The flowing lines on the walls are an aesthetic choice that brings a sensual touch to the room, softness to the atmosphere which can allow intimacy as opposed to straight lines. From within these flows concealed lights bring illumination that is ethereal, never too strong from one direction and evenly spread.

White is chosen as the main motif, allowing the light to play further, dark walnut veneer is used to balance things visually and add contrast. The bed itself is a king-sized bed that forwards the idea of flow by merging into the side tables and walls. The flooring is done in Italian marble, adding to the richness.

While discarding traditional imagery in most of the room, Mr. Duberia in a smart move decided to make the fabrics akin to wedding attire, using heavy fabrics with crystals on the blanket and pillows, and using patterned fabric on the sofa cushions. This adds a modern interpretation of the familiar concept.

Another important part of the room was the walk in wardrobe, which is a straight passage lined on both sides with wardrobes done in veneer, with a small accent of carving present. The use of mirrors on both sides makes the passage feel wider, and is quite handy when the bride gets ready. The marble flooring used sits well with the scheme of things, contrasting the dark of the wardrobe and contributing to the illumination.

Portraying grandness in a modern language of design, Mr. Duberia is successful in meeting Mr. Saya’s expectation and going beyond.
