Patterns remain a fantastic way of adding character and detail to a space, especially when combined with the right colours. And best of all is that there’s absolutely no limit as to what can flaunt some eye-catching patterns, from curtains and carpets to walls and even kitchen appliances.

But unless you want your entire home to be visually swallowed up by chevrons, damasks etc, prepare to follow a few guidelines (conjured by professional Interior Designers/Decorators).

1. Understanding pattern

Patterns, like furniture, can add more punch to a large room, but can also overpower a smaller space. That’s why it’s important to consider the room’s size before deciding on patterns.

Patterns also create illusions, like vertical lines making a room seem taller. And don’t overlook colour, for the higher the contrast between colour and pattern, the more vigorous the latter will seem.

2. Working with varied patterns

It’s possible to combine up to three or four patterns in one space without confusing the design. But take note that only one can be the large-scale pattern (such as on the walls or the bigger furnishings), while the rest are “supporting” patterns. Just ensure your smaller/subtler patterns are based on the dominant one.

3. Creating ambience with patterns

Like colour, pattern can absolutely influence a room’s mood. For an elegant vibe, opt for softer colours and play with designs like fleur-de-lis, lattice, and damask. And for a space to feel lively and fun, consider big, bold colours in polka dots, waves, seashell, etc.

4. Striking a balance

To strike the perfect pattern balance in one room means to spread it evenly around, not pile everything in one spot. And here’s where the room’s size matters, for the larger the space, the bigger patterns and prints you can play with.

homify hint: Vertical stripes add visual height, while horizontal lines make a room seem wider. And would you believe that stripes go smashingly well with polka dots?

5. Mixing and matching patterns

In the olden days, it was believed that mixing patterns was a style sin. Today, the talent to successfully mix and match patterns signifies a keen eye for style and detail! The secret? Consider your colour, because picking distinct patterns in the same colour palette will make them seem more consistent while still adding a little intricacy to the space.

6. Adding in texture

Remember that patterns pop out depending on their textured surface. For instance, spades on a wool cushion will look quite different than on wallpaper.

7. Patterns and wallpaper

Thanks to wallpaper evolving fantastically, more and more people are being brave with this design tool. But to really pack a pattern punch, see where in your home you can wallpaper an unexpected spot, like an elaborate pattern in the bathroom or a fanciful one in your study.

8. Popular patterns: Floral

A true classic, flower-based prints have been popular for centuries. Available in so many different designs, you can opt for a small-scale 1960s flower print for a fun/whimsical vibe, a colourful floral one to mimic the Victorian era, a subtle and abstract version for lovers of minimalism, and many more.

9. Popular patterns: Geometric

It’s that perfect repetition that makes geometric patterns so pleasing to the eye, for nice and predictable visual order has been proven to make one feel safer. And geometric prints are easily softened with rounded curves.

10. Popular patterns: Tropical

Tropical- and botanical prints are about creating a lush- and laid-back vibe. But as this is one of the busier patterns, ensure to include a clean and simple neutral colour, like white or soft grey, to relax the eye.
