Matter of Space Pvt. Ltd. is an interior design and décor firm in Gurugram. Their most recent project was designing a kid’s room based on the client’s brief, which included incorporating calming colours, fun décor and keeping the ocean theme intact throughout the room. Today, we will the entire design and décor process from start to finish, with before and after pictures of the room. This series will give us a perspective on how exactly designers go about transforming a simple, empty space into something magical. So let’s start our tour.

The bare structure

We begin our tour of the room with the basic structure. The house was handed over to the client with wall partitions and basic fixtures, including doors. The rest of the design was up to the client and their interior designers. This gave the designers the freedom of a blank canvas they could paint on. The room is quite spacious, with a lot of natural light and air circulation.

Expanse of space

The walls are completely bare with not a lot of design, which makes it easy for the designers to create artwork on the walls. This also leaves room for them to add furniture in different corners of the room based on the client’s brief. The basic design was so minimal, that it became easier to create an ocean themed room without making any changes to the rooms existing structure.

The highlight

The highlight of the room’s design is this gorgeous French window. A room with lots of natural light is great for children, because it creates a wonderful brightness. This glass wall also meant the designers had to put in safety measures for the child.

First glimpse

Here is a peek into the finished design of the room and we are quite impressed. This is a room that the child will love for years to come. It follows the ocean theme, but quite elegantly. The large window has a small seating area and is covered by curtains. The wall beside the window has been turned into a study table because of the natural light. Wall-mounted shelves and artwork fill up the vertical wall.

Another view

This is another angle of looking at the room. Here, we see that the wardrobe uses a beachfront vinyl to add style to the room and keep up with the theme. The wooden wardrobe is hidden so well that one would think they are actually at the beach. The hardwood flooring also makes it stylish and elegant.

The bed

The bunk bed adds a fun and exciting vibe to the whole room. The stairs to the top bunk also double as storage drawers. The all white wooden frame is in line with the ocean theme the client requested. We can see that the linen used is also careful so the child will love this room and will want to stay here, whether it is to play, sleep or study.
