Once upon a time, the only option when shopping was to round up the kids, and drive down to the local mall or the city centre. Nowadays, the shopping and retail industry has entered into a huge crisis, as people are choosing to shop online and from the comfort of their own homes. As a consequence, however, people are forgetting the experience associated with shopping. Once, it was a trip we planned in advance and greatly anticipated. Now, with a single click, we can have a new outfit at our door within a matter of days.

There is an emotion attached to shopping malls, this is the birthplace of the excitement (or dread) we used to feel when the prospect of new clothes was on the horizon. Shopping inside a mall however, means you can interact with other people, in a range of different climatic conditions and of course, have the freedom and time to roam from shop to shop with friends and family. Today, we have five interesting examples of shopping malls that we, and the designers hope, will bring people back to shopping in real life, not just in viritual reality.

Weather permitting, or not?

The great advantage of shopping malls is that you can go to different stores without the risk of being caught in that sudden downpour that can sometimes ruin your day. Here, at Boulevard Berlin, the emphasis was placed on recreating and mimicking the experience of shopping outdoors, indoors.

Window shopping is something for beginners! True shopaholics don't need a view of shop windows to know the treasures that are held inside. Therefore, it isn't really imperative that shopping centres have windows. In this case, you can hide from torrential rain and heatwaves alike. In addition, the feeling of being encased in a mall in somewhat an escape from everyday life.

Light play

Aside from the clothes and accessories presented, lighting plays a big role.  Indirect light is so often used in shopping malls, because it is not hidden and is much warmer than flashy neon lights. In addition, you can change the colours by pressing a button!

First impressions

This shopping centre, with 3,000 square metres spread over four floors, is the largest premium fashion store for women in Switzerland. But it is not only size that counts! To ensure the selection does not overwhelm the eye, attention has been given to the creative product presentation. Whether in glass cases, on shelves or hanging from the ceiling—the store looks both organised and dynamic!
