What better time than the New Year to clear the old clutter and make a new start with a clean house! As we recover from the festivities of Christmas, too many late nights and over indulgences of New Year’s eve, it is the perfect opportunity to rub the slate clean and start fresh. It is time to make the (much dreaded) New Year resolutions and deep cleaning our living space can be the most rewarding one. As per feng shui a clean house will allow good energy 'chi' to flow through the house providing a calming atmosphere.

So keep your gloves, mops, vacuum, scrubs, brush, cleaning agents ready and get started!

Put all stuff in a room

The key to efficient cleaning is to tackle one room at a time and be organised. Let us not get carried away and do everything at once. As much as we would like to get it over and done with we should give every room the time and attention it deserves. So we start by putting all the stuff into another room, creating a clear working space. This will allow us to reach to all the places that usually lay hidden behind the things we store.

Any large or heavy object such as sofa, bed, wardrobes etc. should be completely covered with newspapers or old bed sheets to prevent the dust from falling on them while we happily swish away our dusters. You will be surprised to see after your done with the dusting and clearing out, how much dust has settled on these newspapers. In the end, it is much easier to pick the newspaper and throw it away when you are done.

The thumb rule of cleaning a room is to start from top and work your way downward as we all know "What goes up must come down". Although Newton wasn't really thinking of housekeeping in particular, we can apply this theory into practice. The dust, spiderwebs, dirt being swept away from the ceiling fan, window ledges, over the cupboards is bound to fall down on the next surface below it. So its a no brainer to start from the top most object in the room.

Next step is to deal with those awkward corners and edges of the room. Our daily cleaning regime may miss these places which become haven for the dust mites and creepy crawlies. This is a good opportunity to ensure that these hard to reach areas are thoroughly cleared of any dust built up over a period of time. Applying a cleaning agent will prevent any further built up for some time at least. Once the corners have been treated it is much easier to clean the central open space of the room.

Clean windows before it gets cold

Windows are such an important part of a house providing the light, air and ventilation and also allow us to peek into the world around us. Nobody likes a hazy or blurred vision so we ensure that spic and span windows are part of this cleaning exercise. There are many cleaning agents available in the market these days, all promising a streak free end result. Else a home made vinegar and water (50-50) solution does a good job too, in an Eco friendly way. We make sure that the panes are cleaned both inside and outside.

Acidic Cleaner for toilet & Bathroom

Last but not the least, there's the grime, lime scale and mildew in the toilet and bath area to deal with. As toilets and bath used multiple times by everyone in the house and occasionally by the guests, we have to make sure that we do not neglect this important part of our homes. The washbasin, mirror, bath tub, shower cubicle and the cistern may all require different cleaning tools. Whereas mild agents can be used for bath tub and fittings, an acidic cleaner may be necessary for the toilet. Make sure bleach is not used along with acidic cleaners.

When you finish, it is time to sit back and enjoy the labor of your love - your squeaky clean home. Get ready for the compliments from friends and family when they step into your abode. Who knows, you may inspire others to follow suit.
