Houses don't have to be big to be impressive, and having two storeys doesn't automatically mean your home is stylish. There are many benefits to having flat houses—one of them being more integration with the surroundings. A home should not only be a warm and dry shelter, but also provide a way to live harmoniously within your environment, and a one storey house makes that easier.

Ideal for country homes, or for areas where restrictions are in place to keep you from building up, flat buildings are the way to go. Also, practically speaking, one storey houses are usually the only option for elderly residents, or for those with disabilities. So if you are considering building a new home and are unsure of the style you are after, or are after a comfortable solution for family members, or if you are simply curious, this is the collection for you.

Sometimes having some restrictions can force you to come up with creative solutions, and you can often end up with better results. So whether you face property regulations, or lack space, it doesn't have to mean missing out on your dream home. This one storey house shows that you can still have a stunning property without a staircase.

The contrasting front panels, uncoloured concrete slabs and striking architecture makes this simply awesome!

1. A Modern Remake Of Retro

This single storey home, called La Pianola lies close to the Atlantic Coast and like it's namesake, is a treasure trove of delightful surprises. Built by architectural firm Moire Arqs, it is a bold statement that doesn't let you take your eyes off of it.

The first thing you will notice is the dominant white rectangular structure that is broken up yellow walls alternating with windows. And if you look closer, you will see the BBQ area that is seamlessly integrated into the overall design.

A View From The Top, Below

From the inside you can see that you don't need to be up high to have amazing views. The floor to ceiling windows running into the corner allow uninterrupted views of both the neighbouring garden, and the bright sky.

So not only are those windows a design feature, they also mean the light floods the whole house—there are no dark corners overshadowed by a top storey looming overhead here!

2. In It's Natural Environment

This bungalow built by Lisbon architects GoodMood is the perfect size to be compatible with the wild landscape around it. The one storey layout means it doesn't dwarf or overpower the trees next to it, and can comfortable blend into the environment.

The long facade and rectangular design mean the architects can really show of the planks of wood used. This may be simple and streamlined, but it is nothing but luxury and quality.

Before And After

In contrast to the rough and rugged trees, the side and rear walls of the home have long, straight lines and are finished in smooth, polished wood.

The juxtaposition of the natural bark that is still alive, next to the cut, flattened and processed wood of the house is poetry through architecture. What a statement!

3. Seclusion Included

This time, architects Metodo 33 from Rosario in Argentina, have built an amazing one storey house, in a mixed zoning neighbouring. So unlike the last house in the middle of the wilderness, privacy is a necessity here. And even with many large windows and an open plan living room and dining spaces inside, the architects have delivered a house of exclusion and serenity.

Large awnings with features of the facade jutting out help create a house that can be enjoyed without interruptions from outside.

Create Your Own Boundaries

One of the benefits of having a house that sprawls out onto the garden is that there is space to create your own boundaries and artificial walls. The proportions of this building means you can play with proportions of the areas around.

And what a great idea to mirror the ceiling with a rock garden of the same shape. Beautiful symmetry!

4. Cross Country

Clean lines, complementing proportions and long, elegant shapes are what make this house a stand out property. With the brick walls and huge windows, next to a turquoise lap pool this Portuguese property is getting a little taste of California in the 70s, and who wouldn't want that?

Designed by another Lisbon based architect firm, this time A.AS Architects, it really uses the one storey format to great effect, wrapping the building in an L shape right around the pool.

Updated Living

But don't be thinking this house is stuck in the 70s. Quite the opposite. The view from the interior, across the pool, and to the private fence shows us it has all the modern trimmings and luxuries.

A huge wooden terrace means the indoor/outdoor flow is fluid and easy. Topped off with elegant landscaping, this is one seriously incredible pad.

5. Traditional Flair

This elaborate brick house shows one storey doesn't have to be minimal after all. If this cute English family cottage is more your style, then we suggest go for it! Get dreaming and start creating your dream home in whatever style suits you.

Our advice: add some beautiful hydrangea bushes, or make sure your garden is up to scratch to celebrate that old school level of taste.

In With The New, Out With The Old

As you can see, the back of the house, the brickwork is gone, and is replaced by a fresh cream exterior, balancing out the old with the new. The windows keep the look refined and regal.

And the pool means the property is right for this century. The addition of lounge chairs next to the pool add the extra level of extravagance.

6. Avant Garde Cave

Japanese architects Atelier Nero have come up with a stunning design that looks deceptive from the exterior. Despite it's cave-like facade, this is no primitive dwelling. Showing off their skill and love of nature, the architects have really created something special that we would love to scurry away into.

We are sure this is a dream house for any kid, and adults alike.

Ladders, Not Stairs!

… and inside the 'cave' you really can tell this is a playful project. Spaces on on either side of the main hallway create some personal spaces for huddling in. Mezzanines are accessible by ladders, keeping this home delightful, entertaining and unique. Never mind they are such a great use of the space.

Whimsical and mischievous, this one story home may be our favourite!
