How to Craft a DIY Laundry Hamper in 8 Steps: Boho home décor ideas
- Cross stitch canvas
- Leather strip
- Plastic bucket
- Multipurpose glue
A decorative laundry basket can add a practical and stylish element to your home décor. Baskets woven from cane are trending, but they are quite expensive. Instead, you can consider making a handmade laundry basket using cross-stitch canvas to create a similar woven texture. The DIY laundry basket that I will show you how to make in this tutorial is inexpensive and easy. It will add lots of style to your bathroom or bedroom. You can also use this canvas laundry bag to store blankets and throws or even kids toys.
Step 1: Cut the bottom of the bucket
For the base of the cross-stitch canvas laundry bag, we will use the bottom of a plastic bucket as it is lightweight and can handle humidity. Start by using a stiletto to make a small cut at the bottom of an old plastic bucket. If you like, you can first mark the line before you cut it.
Step 2: Cut the bucket bottom
Since the plastic bucket might be hard to cut with a stiletto, use a hacksaw. Start by inserting the saw into the opening you made in the previous step. Cut in a straight line to detach the bottom from the rest of the bucket.
Step 3: Sand the edges
The edges of the base will be rough after you cut it, so use sandpaper to smoothen the edges. At this stage, you can paint the base if you want it to match the colour of the cross-stitch canvas.
Step 4: Cut the canvas
The fabric laundry basket that we are making gets its boho vibe from the cross-stitch canvas that we will use for the sides. Measure the circumference of the base and decide on the height you want for the laundry basket. I cut it at a 50 cm height. Once you mark the measurements, cut the canvas. Make sure that you add a few centimetres to the circumference so that the fabric will overlap a bit at the joint.
Step 5: Stick the canvas to the base
Using multipurpose glue, attach the canvas to the bucket base. Glue it in small sections to make sure that it looks well-finished. Glue the canvas where the two ends of it overlap.
Step 6: Add the decorative detail with leather
Make a trim for the basket by cutting a strip of leather. It should be the same length as the circumference at the top of the basket. Use paper clips to hold the strip in place while you apply glue to stick it.
Step 7: Fix the handles
Cut two strips of leather of equal length – they will form the handles of the DIY laundry basket. Place them on the basket, opposite each other, and glue them in place. Add a stud at the base of the handles to give it a better finish.
Step 8: The DIY laundry hamper is ready!
Isn’t it simple to make a laundry hamper with canvas? You can use the same method for different storage basket projects or experiment with various sizes and shapes to suit your décor theme.
