- White Permanent Marker
- PVA Glue
It’s always nice to have handmade or personalised accessories that add life to your home décor, and this homemade coaster with quotes is perfect because it not only upcycles old coasters but lets you get creative with what you want them to say. I came across hundreds of DIY coaster ideas when I was searching online, but this one caught my eye because I could use it to upcycle old coasters that were lying unused in a drawer. These quirky coasters will be a hit with your guests, for sure!
Step 1: Finding old coasters
If you don’t have tacky or funny coasters at home that you don’t ever plan to use, then you can use them for this project. Otherwise, you can buy a set cheap from a second-hand shop or thrift store. If you are purchasing a new set cheap, make sure that the surface is flat so that you can paint and write on it easily.
Step 2: Apply a coat of paint
I used matte spray paint for painting all the coasters black as I wanted to create the effect of a blackboard with the quotes written with chalk. Wait for the paint to dry completely before attempting the next step.
Step 3: Draft or sketch the lettering for the homemade coaster with quotes
Before you begin, make sure you research and find quotes that you plan to write on the coasters. If you don’t like the thought of using quotes, you can also pick images or lyrics of songs or even comic strips. Once you have the ideas, use a pencil to write the quotes or sketch the picture on the coasters. Don’t worry if it doesn’t turn out right! You can always paint another coat over it.
Step 4: Finalise the quote or image
Once you are happy with the sketch, use a permanent marker to define the outline or the letters. I used a white permanent marker in this case to create the chalk-like effect.
Step 5: Apply a coat of glue
Now, coat the coasters with PVA glue so that it increases the durability of the lettering or drawing. You can apply the glue, like you would apply varnish, using a paintbrush or a paint roller. Ideally, the layer of glue should be thin – just enough to coat the surface and protect it.
Step 6: The quirky coasters are ready to use
Once the glue dries completely, you can use the coasters. Enjoy testing them out by placing your favourite drink on it. Your guests will love them. And, the best part – it is among the easiest homemade coaster ideas you can try. They can make a perfect personalised gift for a friend’s birthday or even a charming housewarming present.
